The story
The cabbage called Jiaobai
Jiaozhou Chinese cabbage is locally called Jiaobai or Jiaocai. Public accounts trace its cultivation over more than a thousand years, while modern readers may know it from Lu Xun's image of northern cabbages tied with red string and honoured in the south as Jiaocai.
River soil and winter cold
The crop grows around Jiaozhou's river country in loose, permeable sandy loam. Autumn growth and the arrival of frost lead toward a concentrated harvest around the solar term Minor Snow.
