Linyi Apple
Fresh fruit — apple (Malus domestica)
At a glance
The story
An orchard county on the plain
Linyi lies on the northern rim of the Yuncheng basin, with the Yellow River to its west. It has no mountains and no mines — one of the few entirely flat counties in Shanxi. On loess at thirty-five degrees north the light is strong and the swing between day and night is wide, and that is where the sweetness and the crispness come from. Flat ground also means orchards can be laid out in long rows that machinery can enter.
1930, fifty-nine seedlings
The Shanxi Fruit Tree Gazetteer records that in 1930 Wang Wannian of Da Yanwei village brought fifty-nine grafted apple seedlings — Ralls and Jonathan — back from Yantai in Shandong, and planted what was the only Western-style apple orchard in Shanxi before 1949. Seedlings carried by one man became the beginning of a county.
One village head's stubbornness
In the 1980s Wang Wanbao of Zhuoyi village planted apples against the objections of his family and his neighbours, and became the first household there to earn ten thousand yuan. He proved what this flat land could grow, and the county followed.
Parent and child
"Linyi apple" is registered in its own right as an agricultural geographical indication, and is also a child brand of "Yuncheng apple" under a parent-child model: the parent carries the children, and each child keeps its own name. The protected scope is written out village by village — town, township and administrative village, with nothing left vague.
